An introduction
What is Jyotish?
Jyotish, often translated as “the science of light,” is the traditional Indian system of astrology. It has been practised and refined over thousands of years and remains closely connected to the broader Vedic sciences and spiritual traditions of India.
By examining the planetary patterns present at the time of birth, and the periods that unfold over a lifetime, a Jyotish consultation can offer perspective on personal tendencies, relationships, career direction, significant opportunities and challenges, and the timing of important life events.
A consultation is offered as guidance and perspective rather than fixed or guaranteed prediction. Jyotish can illuminate patterns and possibilities so that you are better equipped to make your own thoughtful decisions.
About Elna
Tradition, experience and continued study
Elna is a Cape Town-based Vedic Astrology (Jyotish) consultant with twenty years of experience. Her approach is disciplined and traditionally grounded, shaped by many years of sustained study under some of the tradition's most respected teachers.
She trained internationally under teachers including Komilla Sutton, Pandit Sanjay Rath and Sarbani Rath, and practises within the principles of the classical teachings of the Sri Achyutānanda lineage. Elna travels regularly to India to continue advanced study in Jyotish and related spiritual disciplines, and has spoken on Jyotish subjects at conferences in South Africa and abroad.
2007
Certified in Complete Vedic Astrology
Awarded a certificate by Komilla Sutton after completing all four levels of her Complete Vedic Astrology Course.
2012 – 2018
Jaimini Sūtra scholarship programme
Completed a six-year scholarship programme in the Jaimini system of Jyotish.
2015 – 2023
Jyotiṣa Paṇḍita certification
Studied the Parāśara Jyotiṣa Programme under Pandit Sanjay Rath in the Himalayas, India, and was certified as a Jyotiṣa Paṇḍita.
Ongoing
Continued study and teaching
Regular travel to India for advanced study, and speaking engagements on Jyotish at conferences in South Africa and abroad.
